5 Korean Variety TV Shows We Recommend & Where to Watch

Last updated on December 9, 2019

If you’ve been watching K-dramas for some time, then you’d probably want to get to know more about your favorite actors or singers-turned-actors. There’s no better way to do so than watching Korean variety TV shows. We love the variety or reality shows, because we get a glimpse of their true personality through watching them complete a mission, play games or perform in a competitive tournament. Take a look at the best Korean variety TV shows of 2018 so far and where to watch them below.

1. ‘Hyori’s Home Stay’ Season 2

Where to watch: Netflix

This JTBC variety show received the Baeksang Arts Award last year when the first of the season starring IU and the Lee Hyori and Lee Sang Soon couple aired. The couple, who got married and started living in Jeju Island since 2013, hosts a bed and breakfast for travelers. They get help from celebrities: IU in season 1, and Im Yoon Ah of Girls’ Generation and Park Bo Gum in season 2.

2. ‘Little House in the Forest’

Where to watch: Viki

The unlikely duo of a reality show, Park Shin Hye and So Ji Sub, star in producer Na Young Seok’s latest. This tvN show flows like a documentary. The narrator, when referring to the cast members as subjects, represents minimal intrusion at best.

When the producer invited the “Doctor Crush” actress to the show, she said yes in 30 minutes, but the “Oh My Venus” actor declined at first. He eventually joined because the little house in Jeju Island got to his heart, according to reports.

3. ‘Youn’s Kitchen’ Season 2

Where to watch: Viki

Producer Na Young Seok’s “Youn’s Kitchen” reminds us of “Grandpas over Flowers” infused with the mukbang trend in that the cast members travel to a foreign country serve Korean food to the locals. Actress Youn Yuh Jung and her crew opens a second restaurant in Garachico, a small city in Canary Islands on the coast of northwestern Africa. They serve kimchi pancakes as a starter, bulgogi bibimbap as a main dish, and hodduk with ice cream on top as a dessert. If this doesn’t sound like the perfect meal, we’re not sure how to get you hooked to this show.

4. ‘Running Man’

Where to watch: Viki

Since this legendary show premiered in 2010, it received six SBS Variety Awards in a row from 2010 to 2015. Actor Song Joong Ki of “Descendants of the Sun” is the show’s former cast member, and so is Leessang’s Gary, who made up the other half of Monday Couple with Song Ji Hyo. Current “Running Man” cast members are Song Ji Hyo, Ji Suk Jin, Yoo Jae Suk, Kim Jong Kook, Haha, Lee Kwang Soo, Jeon So Min, and Yang Se Chan.

5. ‘Busted!’

Where to watch: Netflix

In this first Netflix original in South Korea, seven detectives solve mysteries in a game-like format. This is popular Korean TV presenter Yoo Jae Suk‘s first show since he left Infinity Challenge. “Busted!” also stars Lee Kwang Soo of Running Man and Kim Jong Min of “2 Days & 1 Night.”
